Historical Impact

Over many years of mission-driven focus on pediatric palliative care and hospice, the Greater Illinois Pediatric Palliative Care Coalition has accomplished the following achievements. HAP’s pediatric palliative care and hospice program continues to build on the principles of their past work.

  • Facilitated shared learning experiences, collaboration and communication, and advocacy work for professionals throughout the state.
  • Consulted numerous programs and professionals on pediatric hospice and palliative care programs.
  • Created relationships with national coalitions, agencies, and organizations with shared interests in pediatric hospice and palliative care services.
  • Facilitated numerous education events across the state and nation to improve services for pediatric hospice and palliative care services.
  • Facilitated an Advanced Practice Nurse/Physician mentorship program for professionals in resource deserts to learn from experienced pediatric palliative care professionals. This program impacted greater than 155 children in central Illinois.
  • Provided “virtual rounding” for nine physicians across the state to discuss cases and best practices with other pediatric palliative care physicians.
  • Trained nearly 1,000 school nurses on pediatric palliative care and the POLST form, partnering with Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Board of Education for this education.
  • Engaged in several research studies to expand pediatric hospice and palliative care Programming.
  • Assisted in advocacy and programming for Affordable Care Act Concurrent Care for Children implementation in Illinois.
  • Assisted in advocacy and approval of State Bill 2384 that provides reimbursement for home and community based pediatric palliative care services for individuals utilizing Medicaid benefits.
  • Advocated for State Bill 3819 which supports private insurance coverage of palliative care services.
